We're young retirees and like to get out and see things. We've never been to Puerto Rico. We will not go back to Florida or Mexico, and have heard Puerto Rico might be a good option. Compare the cons of Puerto Rico with the cons of Jamaico if you want also.!|||Hmm! Why NOT to winter vacation in Puerto Rico? Now that’s a thought-provoking question so let me have a go at it:

1. Since the US dollar is the currency, plus the fact that everything has to be brought in by air or cargo ship, prices can be high.

2. If you’re used to the New York subway, you’ll be disappointed by our “urban train”. It’s spotlessly clean and graffiti-free.

3. Driving is a “laissez-faire” activity here. Driving “rules” tend to be driving “suggestions”.

4. Once you get out of San Juan (and you MUST), not everyone in the countryside speaks English.

5. It’s impossible to find root beer, Maxwell House coffee, or black licorice.

6. The concept of “time” is relative. A sign saying “Closed from 12 to 1” actually means “Closed from 12-ish to 1-ish”.

7. Winter daytime temperatures average about 80-85F with sunny skies so you might get a sunburn.

8. Road signs post distances in kilometers, not miles, so you may get confused. Not to worry though, since speed limits are posted in miles, not kilometers.

9. If you are a racist, you won’t find any kindred spirits here so you may feel a bit lonely.

10. Don’t even think of drinking several cups of Puerto Rican coffee at one sitting. It’s guaranteed to keep you awake for the next day or so.

I hope my list convinces you NOT to come visit us and head over to Jamaica!
