Did anybody hear about the vote that's going to take place tommorrow? Congress is going to vote on whether to add Puerto Rico as a State in the U.S. or not. What do you guys think? Do you think Puerto Rico is going to be added?|||No, they're just voting to authorize a vote by the Puerto Ricans.|||no. i dont htink so theyve been talking about it forever and it still hasnt happened.|||They vote ABOUT every ten years and are usually divided. 33% want to be a state, 33% want to be independent and 33% want to remain a territory.

It's up to them, but I hope they join us. They're already Americans so why not get that electoral vote...|||Israel beat them to it.|||Depends on how many more votes the demoRats (liberals, socialist) need to have an anti filibuster majority. 1) I am not a US citizen
    2) I have a valid US driver license
    3) I don't have a passport
Can I flight to Puerto Rico? How long ago did you last flew to PR and what identification you presented at the airport to go and come back? Please answer only if you are 100% sure of the answer, Its very important for me! Thank you very much.|||Sure you can... with a valid US license yo can get in and out of Puerto Rico - 100% positive - I currently live in PR but travel quite a bit for business. Traveling to US territories is the same as traveling with in the continental US. There is some talk to change this and require a passport to re-enter the US from the Caribbean and US territories with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), but the law for US territories has not passed. There is some talk that for 2010 or 2011 this law passes and then passport will be required to re-enter the US from US territories - but for now your are safe with a valid US license that is not expired.|||I am a us citizen from the virgin islands and all i needed was my id. But my mother is not a us citizen cause she's from st. martin and all she needed was her drivers license and her green card thats all she ever uses to get by anywhere. The last time she went was in July. But because of the new laws that are suppose to be coming out she's going to get her passport in Miami next month just to be on the safe side. You should probably think about getting yours too for future traveling. Hope this helps.|||I'm assuming that if you're NOT a US citizen, as you state, that you will need a valid passport of the country you are from if you are not flying from the US. Ok it's not going to happen in the NEAR future but I want to start looking into moving to Puerto Rico. So I need to know where to start to do my research about housing, careers, locations to avoid, and general NON-TOURIST information. It's not about a vacation, but about living everyday life there. So is there a website people should go to who plan to actually move to PR and live and not just vacation?|||I highly suggest the Rincon/Aguadilla area. Breathtaking beaches and nice surfing. I also suggest San Juan, excellent nightlife and culture (however, crime here is much higher than in Rincon, which is a very safe area, so beware).|||Honestly, the best way to go about this is to actually go there for a week, talk to locals, drive around and SEE the areas to know where you'd like to rent. Trying to figure all that out on a website is tough because a lot of times things are different when you actually get there in person. Specifically for Puerto Rico I would go in person because the zoning laws there are different than the states. You will have residential and industrial buildings all mixed up and literally in San Juan, you'll see nice apartment complexes right next door to buildings that have been condemned. In terms of employment, you should check into the laws surrounding legal employment in Puerto Rico. You can go to the government's website to get that info.|||Why don't you go on a quick vacation and talk to the people who live there. I was there for a week and a half last spring and loved it and I wasn't in the glitzy tourist areas, I was traveling cheap, lots of driving to destinations. The only hostel in PR is in Rincon and its pretty nice. The people are friendly and it seems like a nice area to live if you pick a good spot, (the nights were a little loud). Traveling in the southwest area of the island was a lot of open country, Cabo Rojo, Guanica, all nice places. Paradores are also cheap places to stay, its like a dorm style bed and breakfast. www.gotoparadores.com I stayed at Paradore Caribbean Paradise and ended up having dinner with one of the owners who splits her time between NYC and PR, she was very friendly and told me a lot about the country. Thats how everyone I spoke with was, especially at the places I was staying. Go down for 4-5 days and explore.|||i moved here a little over a year ago, to finish school so i knew where i was going and what to expect cause i had been travelling here all my life... what are the things that are important to you? do you prefer a metropolitan atmosphere? are you straight country? do you want a mix of both? those are things to think about...

you're best bet is to come down here on vaca and really explore... outside of the touristy areas and see what kind of atmosphere you'd like...

not like me but if you are really interested post that you are and we can talk about it some more- i'll send you my e-mail or facebook... i can really identify with what you are going through and have a few friends down here who do as well....

Its defintiely a good idea to come see the land of your roots & you will enjoy it too b/c its gorgoeous :) If you are flying from the east coast US the r/t plane ticket will cost about $350-$500, from anywhere else it might be more. Hotel obviously depends on where you stay & for how long & when. High season is Nov-April & the hotels will cost more $$. San Juan is expensive but you can find cheaper hotels there too, around $80 is cheap in SJ. I would suggest renting a car because there is so much to do & see on the enire island, but that would cost more $$. You can stay outside of SJ too. Dorado, Fajardo, Rincon, Ponce.. etc are all nice areas too. Just search around on the internet & see what you like. Spending money also depends how you spend. You can eat cheap in PR, there are roadside food stands everywhere, but if you like fancy restaurants you will need more $$. While you there, you can visit Old San Juan & el Morro Fort, the Bacardi Factory tour, El Yunque rain forest, Vieques & the Biobay, Camuy caves, Arecibo telescope, Caguana or Tibes indian park, Seralles Castle in Ponce, & more.. Okay, I am curious about something. Places like Guam and Puerto Rico have delegates that can vote for the Presidential nominee, but why are they able to? Neither one of them can take part in the Presidential election in November, so what is the reason that they can take part in the primaries?|||Probably because they are not necessarily PART OF, the US
    more CONTROLED BY, the US....

not for sure, just kind of a shot in the dark, but we kind of wanna keep them happy,
But we don't want to give them much real say in our government, they can decide on which members of parties may be able to run but not which party will take office...

once again not sure why...good question though, be interesting to find out...|||they are US territories. As for why they can vote in the primaries and not in the general election I don't know|||Because primaries just say who will be NOMINATED, they still have to be voted for. So it is an internal party thing, not a national thing, per se. So they can do what they want, like saying the third phone call suggestion from Tibet will decide who our nominee is. You just don't vote for the nominee if you don't want them. You aren't FORCED to be in the party.|||They always have been , just never mattered before.|||Because they are American territories representing American citizens who live in those territories. We're young retirees and like to get out and see things. We've never been to Puerto Rico. We will not go back to Florida or Mexico, and have heard Puerto Rico might be a good option. Compare the cons of Puerto Rico with the cons of Jamaico if you want also.!|||Hmm! Why NOT to winter vacation in Puerto Rico? Now that’s a thought-provoking question so let me have a go at it:

    1. Since the US dollar is the currency, plus the fact that everything has to be brought in by air or cargo ship, prices can be high.

    2. If you’re used to the New York subway, you’ll be disappointed by our “urban train”. It’s spotlessly clean and graffiti-free.

    3. Driving is a “laissez-faire” activity here. Driving “rules” tend to be driving “suggestions”.

    4. Once you get out of San Juan (and you MUST), not everyone in the countryside speaks English.

    5. It’s impossible to find root beer, Maxwell House coffee, or black licorice.

    6. The concept of “time” is relative. A sign saying “Closed from 12 to 1” actually means “Closed from 12-ish to 1-ish”.

    7. Winter daytime temperatures average about 80-85F with sunny skies so you might get a sunburn.

    8. Road signs post distances in kilometers, not miles, so you may get confused. Not to worry though, since speed limits are posted in miles, not kilometers.

    9. If you are a racist, you won’t find any kindred spirits here so you may feel a bit lonely.

    10. Don’t even think of drinking several cups of Puerto Rican coffee at one sitting. It’s guaranteed to keep you awake for the next day or so.

I hope my list convinces you NOT to come visit us and head over to Jamaica!

In 1898, US troops invaded the island of Puerto Rico, took over the Spanish government and established a military regimen. Sounds familiar? 108 years after that, we are a US territory, technicaly a colony. We are US citizens and share some constitutional rights. What do you know about this relation?|||The ignorance in the US about Puerto Rico is remarkable.

1.Puerto Rico along with Cuba remained the last autonomous regions of Spain until 1898
    2. Puerto Rico was invaded by the US in July 1898, US naval ship bombed San Juan and many civilians died.
3.US imposed a military colony regime that lasted almost 50 years, also imposed a statutory citizenship.
    4. The nationalist revolts of the 30's and 40's convinced the US that Puerto Rico was never going to be assimilated like Hawaii did, that annexation was impossible due to the strong national identity of Puerto Ricans and the fact that Puerto Ricans were fighting the colonial regime since the invasion.

    5. In July 25 1952 Puerto Rico finally achieves a self governing status. A constitution is voted and established. The official name of the government will be : Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico ( translation: Puerto Rican Free Associated State) (This state was inspired by the Irish Free State before Ireland became a full sovereign state in 1948)
    6. Puerto Rico's self government was recognized by the United Nations in 1953.

Puerto Rico is a nation , it is a latin american country, no doubt about it. it has a common language and history with Cuba and the rest of Latin America and a culture of it's very own that makes puerto ricans unique. Puerto Rico has an olympic team and competes in all international events as a nation. Puerto Rico has won many international events including 4 times the crown of Miss Universe. A puerto rican movie was nominated for an Oscar as Best Foreign Film in 1989 for "Lo que le paso a Santiago".

Puerto Rico's current political status is that of a self governing commonwealth associated with the US (this status does not make it part of the US).This current status is not permanent and it's self determination is recognized by the United Nations. This status has helped puerto ricans enjoy some benefits while the US has had 2 military bases, and protection of US commercial interests which makes Puerto Rico an important export market for US products.|||Don't want to know anything about it. Wish it never happened|||rosie perez is already wearing this point out, by the way. u have no rights, deal with it.|||I know you freaks don't pay any taxes. and need to start ponying up|||probably very little
,judging by a lot of the answers|||"In 1898, Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States as a result of the Spanish-American War, under the terms of the Treaty of Paris, ending 400 years of Spanish colonial dominance. At the turn of the century the U.S. had established a military government with an appointed American governor to direct the new territory.

Puerto Rico鈥檚 relationship with the U.S. Federal Government, as defined by the Constitution of 1952, is in many respects, similar to that of any other state. Matters of currency, defense, external relations and interstate commerce are within the jurisdiction of the U.S. Federal Government. The U.S. Constitution as well as most laws passed by Congress are applicable in Puerto Rico. Residents of the island however, do not pay federal income taxes and do not vote for President. The Commonwealth also has complete fiscal autonomy and residents pay local commonwealth taxes. The island is represented in Congress by a Resident Commissioner elected every four years; currently the Honorable Luis Fortu帽o. The Resident Commissioner cannot vote on the House floor but otherwise enjoys all of the rights and privileges of any other member of Congress."

Now, what is your point? Your question neglects to state all the facts, like the fact that it was ceded to the US as part of a treaty agreement with Spain.

As far as I know, relations between the two are pretty good.|||We know that in your last referendum you refused stateship and Independence, preferring to remain a territory. We know that the mezzanine in the House is closed because of attacks by Puerto Rican malcontents.

We know that in the US you and your children can avail yourself of Affirmative Action advantages over US citizens.

I find it interesting however that you trace the history of your island back only to the Spanish rule. The history of Puerto Rico is much older than that.|||I guess I'm not an "average" American since DH and his family grew up in Guanica, where some of the American troops landed. You, apparently, are an independista. DH and his family, including the ones still on the island, are adamantly opposed to your philosophy. It would be tragic on so many levels for Puerto Rico if it were to become independent. However, I would be more than happy to see it happen. Unfortunately for you and I, every time the citizens of the island are asked to vote for independence, they overwhelmingly vote "no." Perhaps they don't want to become a state because they don't want to pay federal taxes. Can't have the rights without the responsibilities. I was appalled as was my husband's family whenthe last governor removed all American flags from all government offices, including federal. So, too, were many in Puerto Rico because small riots broke out. Do you wish to discuss any specifics or does this cover it?|||I am aware of this relation and would prefer it not to have happened. Puerto Ricans get all the perks of being US citizens, but do not have to pay the taxes.|||I know the Puerto Ricans are a proud people, and should have the right to be self governing. As of now they are a protectorate of the U.S.A. They follow our laws and have all the rights of natural citizens. Our tax dollars are spent to support this country. With that in mind,I think they should,A>ceede they're natioal convictions and accept Statehood,or pay taxes to the U.S. inreturn for the support and military protection they have enjoyed for so many years.|||The U.S. was kicked out of Cuba, but Puerto Rico has been unable to get rid of the invader, something like Iraq.
Before the U.S., Spain was the invader who had no right to turn the country over to the invading U.S.|||Most Americans know little about Puerto Rico. Your facts are generally true, but here is some additional context:

In 1898, America defeated Spain in the Spanish American War, with America defeating Spanish troops and fleets in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Phillipines. Under the negotiated peace treaty, Spain gave America control of Phillipines, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

America established a provinicial government in Puerto Rico, and PR eventually became an organized territory. As such, its citizens became American citizens, with the same rights and responsibilities of all US citizens (protected by US military, pay US taxes, subject to be drafted, etc). However Puerto Rican athletes do not compete as members of the US team at Olympic games - Puerto Rico fields its own team, for whatever reason (could never understand why PR gets its own team but DC does not).

Puerto Rico has had numerous votes on statehood and independence, and every single time they voted to remain a US territory.|||Puerto Rico is a commonwealth
The US citizenship of puerto ricans is a second class citizenship that can be revoked by a congress law since PR association with the US is not a permanent one. That is why PR is not part of the US -do not vote, do not pay federal taxes,etc.. -, it is simple.

The relationship between both countries was established thru a pact in 1952 after a miserable colonial period where puerto ricans suffered the oppresion of the US military rule for many decades[something like what is happening now in Iraq].The most known revolts [ you can search this in google or yahoo anytime] are Massacre of Ponce (March 1937), Massacre of Rio Piedras (October 1935)and the Jayuya uprising that lead to the bombing of the town by US airplanes October 30 1950.

Many do not know about this facts.|||Judging from the answers received, I would say very little is known and what little is said is mostly biased and racist. The relationship is very complicated because Puerto Rico had achieved a higher degree of autonomy under Spain and Puerto Ricans truly are a different People with Spanish as their first language a very different perspective of life. Puerto Rico has been a territory for so long because it is one of the major markets for US goods and because of military goals of the US.

I'm taking a week-long cruise on Royal Caribbean to Puerto Rico and I've never been on a cruise so I'm not really sure what to expect.

What were your experiences with Royal Caribbean?

What are the prices like for food on board? Are any meals included in price? Are the drinks (alcoholic, of course) expensive or cheap? Also, if you have any other suggestions or tips that would be great! |||I'm Puertorican, and I can tell you about cruises, I've been on more than 10 cruise ships, and they are great!. Royal Caribbean is not the best cruise line but its sure one of the best out there, they'll take good care of you. The best part of a cruise ship is the food, so make sure you starve before you get in to one, because you will gain at least 15 lbs, the food is free everywhere, except on the cruise ship's exclusive restaurants, but on the ticket you will be granted "free" meals on the cruise ship's main restaurant (the really big one) where you will be assigned a permanent table with people you don't know, so pray they are fun, they will be your dinner companions for the entire stay; so if you are not into that kind of dynamics, you will have to pay some extra to get into a restaurant where you won't have to deal with that. But there's tons of free food everywhere at ALL TIMES, its an all you can eat routine, there's the top deck buffets, where most people go to get their breakfasts and lunches, and some of the cruises have Johnny Rockets that are free. Now for the drinks, they are not free, you'll have to pay for sodas and alcohol, some offer drink packages before you get on board. Now, there's a lot to do on the cruise ship, tons of activities, out on the deck, mini golf (if its a new cruise), ice skating, movie cinema, theater, arcade, spa, gym. The pool is salty, so its sea water, there's bingo games (good money), CASINO, there's shows every night, dancers, magic shows, shopping, dance clubs. Well, and of course you get to go to different places with a moving hotel, there's tours that you have to pay extra, but they are really expensive, sometimes hiring a taxi cab is way cheaper and far more adventurous. Most of the islands you'll visit are mostly either jewelry or the beach, it all depends on what you're looking for, don't expect a city, the small islands are very small, and basically most of them just offer natural sightseeing, they are pretty much the same, but the beaches are to die for!. Now PR is quite different from the small islands, we are one of the most crowded places on Earth, and have more roads and concrete per/sq mile than any other country in the Caribbean, you'll need more than a day to see PR, its pretty crazy, and there's tons to do in here, we have the beaches, Old San Juan is great, but its not everything, its more like a historical site, but we have great shopping (Plaza Las Americas) and modern San Juan is a vibrant city with lots of activities and nightlife. Well, thats not all but I hope I gave you a little insight of what to expect. But do it, you won't regret it.|||I took a cruise on Royal Carribean. The ship was called Monarch of the Seas

It is a great cruise line! You'll enjoy it! :)|||i went on a royal caribbean cruise with my family to cozumel, jamacia, and the grand cayman, and it was amazing. all the food is included, and is AMAZING, but alcohol isnt included. i'm not sure about the prices because i cant drink, but i dont think it was really really expensive to have a drink with your dinner. the bedrooms and bathrooms are pretty small, unless you get a suite, but it shouldnt be too bad with just a couple people. we survived in a room with a queen bed and bunkbeds and a pullout couch with 5 people. and really, you probably won't be in the room too much as there is a TON of stuff to do on board. you'll have a lot of fun!|||Ive never been sorry but any food is elegant or at least thats what my mom told me |||i have been on a royal caribbean cruise it was so much fun! i hear PR is beautiful but i went to the bahamas. drinks are about 7.50 on the island and you cant take any alcohol back on the ship:( food is included in your ticket however the drinks are not. http://www.royalcaribbean.com/allaboutcr鈥?/a>|||I have been on Royal Caribbean three times and my experience with them has been extrodinary. They are the best cruise line, in my opinion. The drinks aren't too cheap, about $5-$7 each, but if your young and beautiful like me then you will find that you get a lot of free drinks ;) I had a bartender that would bring me a free drink everytime he say me, no matter where I was or what time of day it was.

Do not miss spending some time in Old San Juan. Tour the old fort and enjoy the quaint old shops. Do not choose the fancy gourmet looking eating places but instead look for where the locals eat. • I am leaving for Puerto Rico this Saturday. The weather report says the entire time I am there and I know it's hurricane season. So is taking a pair of wellies a good idea? And is it better to bring a lot of shorts or a lot of jeans?|||Hurricane season doesnt start til June 1st & even then its unusual to get any hurricanes until later. There will probably be rain, but I doubt it will rain the whole time. You don't need the rain boots, it is warm so people normally dont mind getting their feet wet. Sneakers might be better. Also it will be hot, so shorts are good. But jeans & nice pants(if you go anywhere) are good for the evening when its a little cooler & mosquitoes come out, so bring a few also|||puerto rico its mostly sunny and hot humidity days in the summer. cool and breeze in the spring.

hurricane season over here its around august, september and november. the summer its considered hurricane season, but puerto rico summers are normally very hot and good weather for the beach.

i recommend summer comfy clothes and not rainy clothes, rain boots over here are no good, unless u want to go to el yunque, but otherwise u rain boots are not necessary. i suggest sandals, flip flops for the beach and good sport walking snickers/tennis shoes for walking distance.|||I would not say silly just not necessary. 2 jeans,t-shirts,shorts, slippers, sneakers, sun block (about 50 spf.). Use lots of aloe lotion, sold at local Walgreens. Lots of cotton shorts and shirts. Try some of the sandwiches in some local bakery, they are awesome.El Cubano, especially . Instead of wellies bring a good pair of beach slippers, the ones that close your foot in. Don`t worry about anything, hurricanes are still far off. Have a good time.|||The thing is... it might rain, but showers are usually very short.. you might look a bit silly in wellies with a clear blue sky.

Plus they weight a ton... better off just sticking to a good pair of tennis shoes made of materials that dry quickly.

You're also better off bringing more shorts than jeans since even when it does rain it's hot. Bring some jeans for going out at night or where more modest attire is required (church)|||If you think you will need them, just bring them, it doesn hurt. But many people here prefer sandals. Both shorts and jeans is what almost everybody here wears. Except of course, for nice restaurants or going out to a nice place at night. Enjoy your trip!|||It's a good idea to bring all the rain protection you want, I used to wear a raincoat whenever it was pouring, and rain boots too, so there, now you know that you won't be the first nor the last..LOL Have Fun|||Although Hurracaine season starts in June ussually we see the first by August. We have rain events (of different intensity) through the year, but we do not use rain boots. The only rubber boots you may see here are those for construction workers while doing certain tasks.|||That is very, very silly and everyone will laugh at you, LOL.

In Puerto Rico people dont use the term flat. I think you are talking about an apartment or a condo correct? Ok here is a good website to help you. Its the biggest classified site in PR & it has some english. I am not sure of your citizenship, but you I am sure as long as your are allowed to stay in PR for a few months at a time then you should be able to rent a place, but you should talk to officials to be sure. You might have a hard time finding a place to rent for only 2 or 3 months. You can check vacation rental properties & see if they will give you a good deal since its a longtime stay. Otherwise most apts have a 6 month or 1 year contract. Goodluck!

I am going to puerto rico with my family, mainly to snorkel. are the riptides bad there? when does the hurricane season officially end with no possibility of another hurricane until the next season, if at all? Are there a lot of jellyfish? Are there any other considerations that i need to keep in mind? Thank you for all of your answers!!!|||Snorkeling here is more or less same as other places.
    * Not many jellyfish, not a major issue.
    * Hurracaine season ends in November, but we have seen storms or hurracaines in December.

Try to visit Culebra or Vieques, very clear beaches for snorkeling.|||Hi,
I am a diver and a snorkeler. First of all, use sunscreen or a t-shirt. Your back and arms will toast and you won't even know it. Secondly, it's wise to tow a white bleach bottle or a gallon water bottle so as to warn boaters or jet skiers you're in the water. I use a surf leash to tow a white bleach bottle behind me. If you're good swimmers, life preservers may not be needed, but if there's anyone in your party that is a weak swimmer, buy one of those 3$ noodles at K-Mart or Walmart, it'll keep you afloat, and won't interferer with your snorkeling.
Now, all beach areas are not alike. Some do have strong currents. I have found that the best snorkeling time is in the morning. In the Rincon side (Western Side) of the island, the currents change at mid day, the wind picks up and the water gets cloudy at noon. This is not a black and white rule, but a tendency. Sometimes the water is calm and clear all day.
Keeps your eyes open for signs on the beach that advertise strong currents. It's best to go with buddy or a group. Buy one of those disposable underwater cameras, some stuff in the water is way cool. Last year while doing a beach clean up for Surfrider in Rincon we stumbled across a cannon, about 150 yards from the beach, and no one had a camera.
I always take a dive bag and pull out plastics and any small trash that makes its way to the water. I want to do my small part to keep our reefs clean.|||Well it depends where you are going to snorkle... in the north is more dangerous because the sea is more rough.
you most likely wont see sharks or anything like that.
    so overall its pretty safe.
they only place that is a bit dangerous is the Mona Isl. on the west. because the currents from the atlantic and caribbean meet.|||The west side is more for surfers as the water is more difficult to swim/snorkel in. Fajardo is very nice-mainly the beach named Seven Seas and the beach near the Receriba- Reserves and the Lighthouse.

I keep telling Puerto Rican friends of mine that Puerto Rico is not a country because to be a country you must have a President, Prime Minister, etc...but they keep insisting it's a country!|||Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States. Look up coomonwealth that will explain it in any search engine, but its not a country and its not a state.

Some Puerto Ricans have long wanted it to be a country of its own and so have a lot of mainland Americans. Some of the former have been pretty militant. A few tried to assassinate Harry Truman once. Secret Service agents killed them, but one of them got so far as the back stairs to where he was.

I don't know why the federal government hangs onto it. I have been told that the Puerto Ricans have voted to stay with the US when they've had the chance to decide.|||Puerto Rico is considered a Commonwealth. "Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico...(Associated Free State) Puerto Rico is NOT an independent country, but a non-incorporated territory, belonging to the US, but not a part of the US. P.S. There is a big movement in PR to become an independent country...so maybe that's where their coming from?|||Puerto Rico has never been a country. It was founded by the Spandiards, who killed off the natives. They had the territory until the Spanish American War, which they lost.

The Puerto Ricans themselves don't want statehood, and they will be independent within our lifetime. Puerto Ricans have resoundingly rejected statehood, during 3 recent special elections. Maybe I could say something about how they are a US territory? Can you please help me? Thank you!|||Well being from Puerto Rico and living here as well our entire history as a national people has been under colonial rule. From 1493-1898 Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain and that is where we acquired almost all of our cultural costumes and of course our language. Despite us being a U.S. territory, the majority of Puerto Ricans speak only Spanish. After the Spanish-American War(in 1898), Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States and we have been a U.S. colony ever since.|||Either you are DUMB AS SH*T or you are a F#@KING LIAR.. Also if there are any planners, or wedding specialists in Puerto Rico who you have used then please us know as it will really help. We havent been there before but we think it would be an ideal location for a destination wedding.|||When i went with my fiancee, we went to this lighthouse at the very edge of a beautiful cliff in a place called Cabo Rojo. It's about 2 hours away from San Juan, and is beautiful! Actually where i proposed :) Should look it up|||I have been to that destination mentioned above and it is stunning. I also have been to Rincon beach and that is also a fantastic setting. If you are lokking for a more private area then Cabo Rojo would be better as it's quite far from the capital.

However, a lot of weddings in Puerto Rico take place at beaches because the weather and scenery is so beautiful and you can get many hotels, especially at Rincon beach that deal with weddings and can be very helpful in organising. I'm sure also they will recommend any planners that you are looking for and will most likely cater for you instead of hiring an independant company.

There are other people you can look for e.g. a wedding photographer and I know one person name Jose Febus who has done beautiful work at weddings. He works weddings all over PR and is easy to work with.

Is beginning of July a good time to visit Puerto Rico in terms of weather?|||This is a tropical island, there is the potential for rain every day. It's no more rainy in July than it is in March, but it is hotter. The daytime high will average in the mid 90s. The thing about rain here is that its pretty much unpredictable. I've seen days with an 80% chance of rain give not one drop. Also it can be raining here, but not 3 miles from here. I've seen it raining across the street, but none on my side! It's highly unpredictable is my point. As for hurricane season we haven't seen a hurricane since the 1990s, and the peak time is after August,September and October.

The begining of July is when the local beach season is in full swing, the most popular public beaches will be crowded and there will be more locals taking their own vacations. Personally I take my summer vacation to the mountains, and keep my beach days to mid week during this time of the year.|||July will be in the rainy season, and hurricane season.

I'm sure that if you don't leave your resort in Mexico you will be safe. Your trip maybe less expensive in Mexico, but in Puerto Rico you're on American soil. You don't need a passport. But this is extremely serious, and please be sure to add you source. thanks bunches! :)|||El cupacabra is a spanish myth just like el cuco but im not sure if it has much of a "significance" or "symbolism" aside from being a blood sucking animal. im not sure though if its a myth or not. my grandma has told me stories about el chupacabra and over the summer when i visited puerto rico i visited my uncle who has a farm and he too told me and my father stories about el chupacabra. he said years ago he woke up and 5 of his bunnies were dead but completely drained of blood.. not sure if what he was saying was true or not since my aunt was nodding along with him but im 18, so i doubt he was telling me a little kids myth story to get me scared or whatever. but anyways im drifting away from your question. sorry.. not sure if any of this helps but to the people of puerto rico it seems to have a significance|||The Chupacabras doesn't have any cultural significance or symbolism in PR. It is not an urban legend or a "thing" to scare children like the boogieman. Like in other countries, including USA, people called Chupacabras to this unknown animal that sucks all the blood of the animals w/o eat them. I think the only difference is that in Puerto Rico was the first time where this animal was reported and named.

    * Few movies (with or without scenes filmed at Puerto Rico or directly mentioning Puerto Rico) has been produced and released.

basically it could be a way to attract sales and make business out of it all.|||As far as I know. there IS NO CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE.. it's not some "Bogie Man" or "Bogie Animal".. it is a REAL ANIMAL.. or at least WAS a real animal but there is no CULTURAL significanc to it,which was your question

I don't want to waste all the money to get to the airport and find out I can't board the plane. Please let me know!!!!!!|||Puerto rico is a US territory, No passport required! They have a new change in 2008 that people going to the carribean need passports but not to PR or any other US territory. Just a state ID w/ a photo. Here. Read the paragraph from the official US Gov website. read all the way through. ENJOY!!

"As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands."|||If your leaving the US you'll need a Passport to return. For further Real information on what is required check the following websites: ustravel.gov or USPS.com both will have information for you to see about out of country travel...|||Puerto Rico is considered a US territory so all you would need is your ID or Birth Certificate.|||You don't need anything but your photo ID to get onto the airplane. Are there places to camp on Culebra and Vieques? I'm going on a weeks vacation to Puerto Rico and I want to spend half of it camping and the other half in a nice hotel. Where are some of the best camping areas both on and off the beach?|||Hi, I live here and I love to camp. So both Culebra and Vieques have campgrounds. At Flamenco beach (discovery channels second best beach in the world!) in Culebra there are great camping facilities right on the beach. There are bbq pits, showers and kiosks selling supplies and local foods. The taxi from the ferry dock is cheap and fast. Depending on the time of the year this place is CROWDED. Easter week is impossible and the summer is pretty crowded if you can even manage to get on the ferry. http://www.islaculebra.com/puerto-rico/c鈥?/a>

Vieques has Sun Bay, but it's not even close to being as good of a campground as Culebra but you have the offset of the great hiking to other beaches close by and the malecon in Esperanza with it's great restaurants. Also when in Vieques you can go see the Biobay which is an experience that you don't want to miss. Here is a link to a great info site on Vieques and a video of the camping there. Click on the biobay link. http://enchanted-isle.com/videos/sun_bay鈥?/a>

Compania Parque Nacionales runs most of the best campgrounds in Puerto RIco here is a link to a list of there campgrounds. It's in Spanish but it's not that hard to figure out. The ones I've been to and love are Cerro Gordo, Punta Guillarte, Monte Del Estado (mountains not beach), and Seven Seas. http://www.parquesnacionalespr.com/seven鈥?/a>

Now away from the beach the best camping in PR is Torro Negrro (I must misspell the last word or YA won't let me put it) It's in the highest mountains of PR and it has a clean river running through it, fantastic hiking, panoramic views, waterfalls and the temp doesn't go above 85. I don't believe that Wikipedia stuff, tell me in your own words if you're an Puerto Rican Immigrant yourself that know the history of how Puerto Rico became an American Territory.|||Spain and USA engaged in the Spanish American War of 1898, and Spain lost. USA and Spain make a peace treaty in Paris, to the end of the war. Spain ceded their last colonies to USA, including:
    * Puerto Rico
    * Cuba
    * Guam
    * Philipines.
USA managed differently each of these four.

If you do not trust Wikipedia, there are many other encyclopedic and history websites to look for information. Or go to a library and find history books about:

I'm visiting Puerto Rico (San Juan, Vieques) the last two weeks of September this year. Wondering what the weather is usually like around this time, and any predictions for this year?|||If you are scare of flying not a good time a rough flight is expected at this time of year. The weather in Puerto Rico is great at this time of year.|||September is the peak of the hurricane season. So basically you will expect lots of rain, hopefully not a hurricane or storm. Also, weather in the northern part of the island is a lot more humid and rainy than the southern part. The southern region also tends to be hotter, about 90-100°F, and it's not as rainy and humid as the rest of the island.|||September is at the peak of the storm / hurracaine season. Does the army national guard ever leave state to train in Puerto Rico? If so, is this training any different from the training that is done once a month or does it help because the difference in surroundings?|||The Army National Guard serves in communities like yours. With more than 3,500 locations throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, there鈥檚 probably an Army National Guard Armory near you.

They have whats called AT (active training) where they become full time members for 2 weeks up to 1 month each year. This location where they train changes most of the time from year to year. Its where they play "Big Army" they train on the same tasks and abilities as we do in active duty full time Army.

The main reason they do this is so when they deploy and yes they do deploy they will be trained and ready to help fight our nations wars when we need them. however the primary focus of the National Guard is our Nations Safety in the USA. But yes I have served with many National Guard Members here in Afghanistan.

And my hat is off to them they are just as good as any active duty guy.|||I wouldn't think so considering the National Guards primary function is serving a specific state.|||Puerto Rico has its own National Guard Forces. There would be no need for a Guard force from another state or territory to be brought in to PR.|||no|||Yes...PR has it's own Guard and like any other Guard they go other places to train and other states come there to train..nothing unusual. I live in New York and have property in Puerto Rico. Do I need to make two Last Will and Testaments? I was also told that I can not disinherite any child according to "Puerto Rico law" Wouldn't the state I reside in laws apply since I only have property and do not live in Puerto Rico?|||The state that you reside in would ultimately decide what happens. If you want to make sure your kids don't receive anything from your death, then a will is a good idea. You should also have a will if you own any property or money so that the executor knows what to do with it. Otherwise, everything will go to your next of kin. Wills should be very specific especially when you have a lerge family of children under 18. Make sure that you can trust your executor to carry out the will. You can also put specifications in the will, for example, my parents will says that until I reach 24 years old, I can only get a percentage of the money left by them. Or you could say that your kids get their part once they have graduated high school or college. But, everyone needs a will to protect their assets.

According to the U.S. Council for Puerto Rican Statehood, 57% percent of Puerto Ricans want statehood. So that means on the next plebiscite that statehood will probably win. Do you think Puerto Rico should become a state, stay as it is, or become independent? I have mixed feelings on this, I just want to hear other people's thoughts.|||Of course, even if Puerto Rico were to request statehood, the matter is one for the Congress to decide, and we need to decide that in accordance with the interests of the United States, and not merely from the viewpoint of Puerto Rico.

According to polls I have read, 48% of the population favors statehood, 47% of the population favors the current commonwealth arrangement, and 5% wants the island to become independent. That is not a sufficient display of public sentiment for statehood. As the civil war made clear, statehood, once granted, is permanent, and if less than half of the people want it, it should not be granted. When Alaska and Hawaii became states, upwards of 80% of the population wanted it.

Puerto Rico currently enjoys many of the benefits of statehood with few of the burdens. For example, persons who live in Puerto Rico, and derive their income solely from Puerto Rican sources, are not subject to U.S. income tax, yet U.S. welfare is paid on the island. Also, persons born in Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens by birth.

NOTE: The Yahoo! spell checker thinks that "Puerto Rico" should be spelled "Porto Rico," but I prefer the spelling "Puerto Rico."|||No.

Puerto Rico is just a territory allied to the United States. It is not recognized as a state because it does not wish to. No requests have been filed to join the Union. Puerto Rico is good as it is, we don;t need it to join the Union if it is good already.

Besides, 51 states doesn't look good as 50 states, just doesnt sound right.|||I wish they were independent. I can't imagine how in the world the U.S. benefits from having this relic from the Spanish-American War attached to us -- I think there is a huge outflow of welfare to Puerto Rico and very little good that comes in from it.

No way should it be left up solely to Puerto Ricans -- I think the rest of us should be able to decide first if we want to invite them to be a state -- THEN, when all 50 state agree, the Puerto Ricans can put in their 2 cents' worth (oops, centavos' worth).|||No, the American taxpayers cannot afford a 95% increase of welfare recipients, no I am no being bias or racist, Puerto Rico is mostly unemployed and right now America is heading for if not already there a depression with unemployment rate about to go double digits.|||The people will decide the right coarse. It should be entirely in the hands of the indigenous population. At the moment to stay as it is. In the future who knows.|||Should? I don't know. What do the people there want? I guess it's really up to them. It's no skin off my back if they want to be part of the U.S.|||That should be up to the Puerto Rican people and thus far, they have not requested to be a state.|||no because its an island

I'm a senior and I'm looking to go to college this coming up year.I heard that in Puerto Rico, the tuition is a lot cheaper. Plus, it's beautiful there. I would love to go to college there and I know a lot of Spanish but I wouldn't be able to take my classes in Spanish. So are there any colleges there where I could take all my classes in Spanish?|||The truth is that all colleges in Puerto Rico (public or private institutions) usually give all their lectures in spanish. But some mayors tend to be more english friendly. For instance, when I studied Chemistry in University of Puerto Rico, R铆o Piedras Campus almost every math and science textbooks were written on english. Also, almost every professor give us the chance to write our papers and/or tests on english or spanish.

I do remember as well, my statistics professor, a german called Dieter Ritz gave his lecture on english with a thick accent. Also, Physics professor Selsby, General Chem was also on english. So, If you know a little spanish and if you plan to be a natural science mayor it shouldn't be a mayor challenge study here. But beware, I think other faculties (like pedagogy) would be less friendly on that matter.

People say that Puerto Rico is a poor island and its not I live in Puerto Rico and they have almost everything that the U.S. have.Heck the girls are even hotter here. Why do people discriminate Puerto Rico?|||We are becoming a Banana Republic.|||Puerto Rico is not a country but a U.S. territory and all Puerto Ricans are natural-born U.S. citizens. They are definitely NOT a "third world island". According to Puerto Rico's tourism website, "Gross National Income (GNI per capita) (formerly GNP per capita): $53.4 billion; per capita: $13,675.1 (2006)
Puerto Rico is classified as a high income country, high income countries are defined by the World Bank as countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of $11,116 or more."|||Ignorance of the definition of the term "third world" developed during the "Cold War" era.. Discrimination against puertorricans and using the term "third world" in a pejorative way.

Third world country: The term Third World arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned with either capitalism and NATO (which along with its allies represented the First World), or communism and the Soviet Union (which along with its allies represented the Second World). This definition provided a way of broadly categorizing the nations of the Earth into three groups based on social, political, and economic divisions.

First World: the United States and its allies.
Second World: the Soviet Union, China, and their allies.
Third World: neutral and non-aligned countries.

    Puerto Rico is :
    * economically aligned with capitalism,
    * politically is a territory of the USA, technically speaking PR is not "part" but a "property" of the USA.
    * socially we are a western culture, with strong hispanic roots and also (since 1898) with USA influence.

Puerto Rico is (according to the definitions) part of the "First World" (US and its allies) not part of the "Third World" (not aligned with the US, and not aligned with the previous URSS).|||I live in Puerto Rico and am Puerto Rican as well and I can tell you that we are NOT a third world country. It's completely obvious that we aren't and despite having some flaws in our society, give me a country in the world that does not have social problems. We actually have one of the highest standards of living in the Americas and the world. 隆Qu茅 viva Puerto Rico independiente!|||I have never heard anyone say that. My friends and I took a trip to Puerto Rico just months after I became an American citizen (I am a dual citizen, Sweden and US). I didn't even need a passport:)

It is very beautiful...the island and its people. I think PR is very advanced and its people are very educated.

When I was there, I felt like I was just in another US state, but I never forgot that I wasn't. They have freeways, their own license plate, and have great and beautiful architect just like New York, California, Hawaii. They have running water and electricity everywhere. Stores that are in the US can be found in Puerto Rico, like JCPenney's, Radio Shack, Claire's, etc. Lots of Puerto Ricans run their own shops like the people from the other 50 states.

Puerto Rico is definitely not a third wold...but I wouldn't consider it a first world either. I would love to go back there sometime soon.|||I'm not sure why people would say that and I don't think that Puerto Rico is considered a 3rd world country. There are definitely things that set it apart from the "states", but Puerto Rico is much different that say, Mexico or some other Latin American countries.|||Can't tell you why it is considered "3rd world". I can say that having visited Hawaii, Guam, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Malta and numerous islands in the Caribbean I think Puerto Rico is one of the prettiest and nicest islands an individual can enjoy.|||there are two reasons why someone would say PR is a third world country

    1. they are stupid and have no idea how and where puerto rico is located and how the government runs things as a modern world country, so they repeat or say whatever comes to their stupid mind.

    2. someone who might be jealous of puerto rico and talks junk about the island.|||I have never heard anybody say that. I think this comes from ignorance about Puerto Rico.|||I have never heard anyone say that, so I dont know.

Every day's weather seems to be rainy.|||Yes actually it does in August. I was raised there and every 1st day of August it rains and so everyone goes outside and you see the horses on the streets. It's really nice but afterwards you tend to get sick hahaha. And yes it is worth seeing Puerto Rico is beautiful and I'm not saying this just because it's my homeland. =) It'll always rain in Puerto Rico since it's mostly tropical but it's worth every penny, guaranteed =) Just be sure to not go to the bad areas like Diplo, Naguabo, those old places. I'm actually from Naguabo so I know what it's like. LOL|||yes, and its not only rainy but its hurricane season as well.

some areas of the island rain more than others, the taller the
mountains the more chance of rain, the drier the less. southern and western part of the island its drier than the center norther and eastern part of the island.

best time to travel its in spring time (march, april and beginning of may).|||I was just in PR just last week for 3 days and it rained every day but it wasn't a study rain. Like it would be sunny and hot all of a sudden it would pour raining for about 10 mins then stop and the sun would come back out and it would get hot I mean hot again enjoy your trip..|||I have never been there personally.
But yes it will probably be very rainy/stormy.

I would still consider going, but just realize that you will not have as good a time as if you went in a better season.|||yes it rains, depends where you are.
the rain there is very unpredictable.
where i live, its really sunny in the morning and then at about 3 it starts pouring rain that lasts for like 20-45 min and then it turns sunny again.|||Sometimes. But don't worry, the weather in August is very hot. At least where I live. So not a lot of rain.

BLACK BEARS and WATER BUFFALO and BIG HORN SHEEP, then there are the LIONS and TIGERS and PANTHERS and don't forget WART HOGS and CAPE BUFFALOS

If you are smart enough to go big game hunding, then you should be smart enough to know THERE IS NO BIG GAME ON PUERTO RICO,, I don't know what you are "GRADUATING" from.. but they didn't bother to teach you about INDIGENOUS ANIMALS in the world and WHERE TO FIND THEM...

    * There are no deers, moose, buffalo or similar big game here.
    * No lions, rhino, elephants, or zebras either.
    * The nearest thing to big game hunt in PR is going angling or game fishing. Options :
*** Swordfish: They reach a maximum size of 14 ft 9 in (455 cm) and 1,400 lb (650 kg). The International Game Fish Association's all-tackle angling record for a swordfish was a 1,182 lb (536.15 kg) specimen taken off Chile in 1953.
*** Marlin: The larger species include the Atlantic blue marlin, Makaira nigricans, which can reach 5.968 metres (19.58 ft) in length and 818 kilograms (1,800 lb) in weight, and the Black marlin, Makaira indica, which can reach in excess of 5 metres (16 ft) in length and 670 kilograms (1,500 lb) in weight. They are popular sporting fish in tropical areas.
*** Or maybe a shark, several species of sharks swim the waters around PR, including:
    ***** Tiger Sharks
    ***** Blue Sharks
    ***** Silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis)
***** Oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus)
    ***** other sharks
    * You mean hunting with a gun, not with a fishing rod and a yatch? You can hunt for certain wild birds in Puerto Rico, not sure when the hunting season is open.|||no hunting in PR, unless you want to shoot some exotic iguanas, there id actually nothing to hunt there. I dont know about other countries, only thing I can think of its south america brazil or something but I dont know about the hunting laws in south american countries. Before you do that, you want to make sure you do know the laws because then you will be hunted and that's not good.

Only thing you can do in PR is exotic iguana hunting in the middle of the jungle and its not illegal, even thought hard to find and kinda stupid. If your looking to hunt big animals then PR and the caribbean islands its not the place because they dont have big mammals running in the wild. Only dangerous insects like spiders and centipedes that are fatal, that's it.|||Neither of those places is in South America. Never heard of any "big game" in either place.

Hawaii with its rich culture and far away from the mainland became a state in 1959, yet its habitants are very american, their language is mainly english, etc. Puerto Rico on the other hand is closer, has been a commonwealth since the 1900's and has more in common with western culture, yet language is mainly spanish and in every aspect is very culturally independent.|||It was the fur trade between the Pacific Northwest and Canton that made the Hawaiian Islands a desirable way station and a convenient stopover between trading seasons.

The arrival of the first Puritan missionaries from New England and the introduction of the first whaling ships to Hawaii's harbors. Their arrival accelerated the revolution in Hawaiian life that had been inaugurated by Cook's arrival, the main features of which would be: (1) the transition from a society in which wealth, power, and status were based on land to one in which they were increasingly measured in money; (2) the increasing control of that monetary economy鈥攁nd the wealth and power and status associated with it鈥攂y Westerners rather than by the Hawaiians ; (3) the transition from a rural, largely subsistence lifestyle to an urban, consumerist one, with the accompanying rise of individualism at the expense of the traditional communalism; (4) the replacement of the traditional religion and its related social controls by a religion ill-suited to the Hawaiians in the form of Calvinist Christianity; (5) the introduction of Western laws, practices, and institutions that were easily understood by the Westerners, but which increasingly placed the Hawaiians at a disadvantage in coping with these alien devices; (6) and the integration of Hawaii into the global economy, with the accompanying globalization of Hawaiian culture and daily life.. The ratification by the United States in 1875 of a reciprocity treaty with the Kingdom of Hawaii enormously accelerated the growth of the sugar industry.
A provisional government was established under Sanford B. Dole and a mission was dispatched to Washington, D.C., to negotiate a treaty for annexation of the islands by the United States. On 12 August 1898 the flag of the United States was raised over Iolani Palace in Honolulu.

The Spanish sought to displace the "pagan" religion of the Indians with their own "true" Catholic religion. They believed God was on their side; and they had a sense of mission that made them very intolerant. They transferred to America a system known as the encomienda, a system very similar to a Feudal fief in Europe. Under this system, army officers who had won favor became privileged landowners often controlling several groups of Indian villages. They were to protect the villages and also to support missionary priests. In turn, they collected tribute and labor from the Indians. The Spanish had no understanding or tolerance for Indian culture. Indian men had been hunters and warriors, who
did not labor daily. The Spanish considered them lazy and indolent, and forced them to work in silver and gold mines and also to work the fields. This was women's work for the Indians, and as a result, thoroughly demoralized them. Additionally, the Spanish considered them expendable, and frequently worked them to death. This cruel treatment, together with the onset of European diseases, was disastrous. By 1500, Indians in the West Indies were practically extinct. In all of Spanish America, Indian population declined from 50 million to 4 million in less than one hundred years.

Although this article refers to Mexican colonization the same rules and regulations were applird throughout the Spanish colonies. It is evident the Spanish system was vastly different from that of the U. S.
People in New Spain were organized into a caste system, by law. This caste system was based on race. Those at the top lived very well. Those at the bottom lived very harsh lives. The Peninsulares or Gauchapine, (European born whites) considered themselves superior to the Criollos or Creoles (Colonial born whites) and were supported in this belief by royal decrees from Spain. Both castes were, by law, politically and socially above the mixed bloods, the Mestizo and Mulattos, who were socially and legally superior to the Indians, who were socially superior to the Negroes.

Parents wanted their children to marry into a higher caste if possible, or at least within their own caste. As a result, many Criollo women (Colonial born whites) married Gauchipine men (European born whites). This caused a shortage of wives for Criollo men in their own caste, and forced them to marry women from lower castes, which affected their childrens. The Criollo men (Colonial born whites) were already angry, as they were prevented by law from holding the highest ranking positions in the church and the government, positions their parents held, simply because their parents had been born in Europe and they had been born in New Spain. This created a great deal of jealously and discontent. In order to ensure their children were Gauchipine mothers would board a Spanish ship to give birth because the ship is considered to be Spain.

I saw a commercial for Walmart that said "Prices may vary in Alaska and Puerto Rico"

Are prices more or less there?|||more probably - farther away - higher shipping costs

uhh, Steve - you say it's not always something to do with transportation cost, but then you go on to describe two different situations where is it definitely related to shipping costs or distance - you contradicted your own statement|||Prices are always higher. Contrary to popular belief, it is not due entirely to transportation costs. Almost all goods are barged in and it barging items on the ocean costs a fraction of trucking. (think about it, all those Chinese goods sold in America come via ocean freight and shipping doesn't eat up the majority of the price). I used to own a retail store in Alaska and sometimes the manufacturers shipped things to me at no cost. Depending on their location (west coast versus east coast) the cost of getting product to Alaska was cheaper than them getting it to New York.

Some items, like fresh produce (leafy greens etc) have to be flown in and have higher shipping costs. Other foods (canned goods, fruits, etc) come on the barge.

However in the areas you describe everything costs more. Real estate, energy, health care, food, building maintenance, etc. The cost of doing business is higher so the stores have to charge more.|||I live in Anchorage, ak. My mother and I had a conversation 2 weeks ago while we were both at wal-mart. I was here in Anchorage and she was ain the Kansas City area. We compared prices on the exact same products and found that in some cases we are almost paying double up here, but overall we were paying about 30% more than a KC wal-mart. The reason for this is that absolutely everything in Alaska has to be shipped in by ship or plane--there is only one road that connets us to the lower 48 states and 18 wheelers are not allowed to drive it all the way to us (about a 4 day drive).|||They are rural areas.

What's the best place to stay that's central to these areas? Should we rent a villa/condo or stay in a hotel? Is a trip to Vieques or Culebra worth it -- and if so, should it be a day trip or should stay over? Thanks for the help!|||Condo are great when you want to sleep in late and do what ever you want at your own leisure pace. We decide on this trip to go to Culebra Island, it was breathe taking and worth the trip, one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world according to the travel channel. I'm hoping the investigation will reveal a signature to the material so that the offender can be appropriately punished. In a perfect world the offending ship/company/nation would step forward and accept responsibility and assist with cleanup operations.

That this spill is 5-miles wide and threatening sensitive corals and mangroves, as well as the Guanica Dry Forest, is alarming, to say the least. That it potentially impacts tourism and commercial fishing is probably a good thing, as it gives authorities and stakeholders added incentive to prevent and address spills. I would like to know how is Puerto Rico. Im planning on going for the first time and do you think it would be worth the trip?
How is the weather out there in December?|||I went in February about 2 years ago, and it was great. I'm also going back this December for a cruise.

If you haven't been to the Caribbean before, the weather is weird. One minute you'll have crystal-clear, blue skies, and the next minute you'll be sitting in a rainstorm. However, the rainstorms are nice, since they only last a few minutes, the rain is warm, and you only get them 1 or 2 times a day in the winter. The Caribbean is technically a year-round destination, and I've done a lot of research on the Caribbean, and I think the best time to go is actually in the wintertime. The rainfall is historically lower in the winter, and the humidity is also lower than the summertime. The hurricane season has passed (June 1st - November 31st), and it's not as sweltering as it is in the summer.

As I said, I'm going back this December, and from the weather patterns and statistics I've seen and the December Caribbean reviews I've read, I'm not expecting any problems.

Don't worry about it. It will be great! Have fun!|||. whethe nice, and is a lot of celebration in dec tru january 2010, happy hollidays|||PR is one of the prettiest islands in the Carbbean, there is much to do, like going to El Yunque, seeing Ponce, the Barcardi Factory, Old San Juan, theres a great mall, great night life and beautiful beaches. We stayed in Dorado, which is very quiet, but beautiful...a wealthier area on the island. The weather in december will still be in the 80s...Still perfect and lush.|||first of all do not go 2 the campo you will not reception! the weather in puerto rico is always hot, in the evenings it gets in its 70's. other then that u will have a great time. its worth the trip. the waters are clear nd ull enjoy every moment of it|||Its great in Puerto Rico. The people are great, the weatgers good, though pack an umbrella in case of raining. The food is great too, including the local food. And if you do visit, I recomend you to visit the Viejo San Juan, because it will teach you not only Puertorrican Culture, but also Spanish. But the weather in Puerto Rico is really good, but December here is really cold, at least for me. Its above 75F and bellow 95 F.|||it's pretty cool. i actually called 1-800-866-STAR and they send you all the info you may need about PR. It's like a tourism phone number. I called and got me my phamphlets.

Often times I read about a lot of benefits that people from Puerto Rico have. It seems to be looked at as a state in many ways, but in other ways it is not. In actuality it is not of course.|||They demand the same rights as states, yet insist on maintaing their own nationality.|||Puerto Rico was given to the US in 1900 for winning the Spanish American war.
People in Puerto Rico are US citizens but they don't pay federal income tax. The people of Puerto Rico voted in 1967, 1993 and 1998, voting against statehood all three times.
Why don't all other countries do the same thing? The other countries in the region are independent or are members of the British Commonwealth, and they prefer to stay that way.
    |||Puerto Rico is not treated like a state, is treated like the colony that is.

  • In the US, gas prices are usually like 1.99 and 9 tenths of a cent per gallon. In puerto rico it is 44 and 7 tenths of a cent per liter. I don't know if it is because it is liters instead of gallons. If anyone knows or has any ideas, please let me know.|||it has to do with converting gallons into liters and vs. In the US its gallons in PR its liters. So sometimes if the liter price goes up in PR and its lower in gallons in the US, people may think its still cheaper in PR because they see it as liter and not gallons, but its either more expensive or basically sometimes the same price, depending on the cents per gallons in US or per liter in PR.|||Ok Daco, the PR version of consumer affairs here changed it from 9/10 to 7/10 a couple of years ago to adjust for evaporation. See when a gas retailer receives their load of gas some evaporation occurs during the unloading and loading of the gas. So there is a price adjustment made to every order for the evaporation. Daco decided that the consumer needed this to be passed on to them. So they give them 2/10 percent. It's all BS, but that's what it was about.
BTW, the gas in PR is always cheaper than it is in the states. Usually by 20 cents a gallon.|||ok. that begins when the goverment order to sell the gasoline in summer in 7 tenths because the gasoline with the hot of summer expand, or i dont know what and that was the reason, but the sellers never change that prices again to nine tenths. this was happen in two thousandth something. i dont know the specific year. i think it was less that 2006.

I am an Australian living in America. I have been advised by my immigration lawyer not to leave America for the next 9 months until all of my papers clear. If I go on a holiday to Puerto Rico will I need to go through immigration? Will I require my passport? Will I only need to same documentation as I would if I were to travel interstate?|||Traveling to Puerto Rico is just like traveling to another state...do not need to use your passport. You just need a photo I.D.for the plane...like a drivers license. You could could use your passport as I.D. if you like...no customs to go through.|||Our bunny friend is missing something, you said you're Australian. Are you living in the US with some kind of visa? Did you got American citizenship? If you still hold an Australian citizenship, you must use your visa and your passport to travel outside continental US, is not needed to go from state to state, but needed to go outside continental US and you'll need it specially to get back into US.

Thank you all very much.|||Next to Villa Cofresi in Rincon, there's a a place. Last time I checked they rented out jet skis for about $75 an hour.|||Jet Ski rents are everywhere...LuisO's answer seems enough to answer your question. BUT,if you want to go Jet Skiing go to Boqueron or maybe even in Combate, those are the best beaches in Puerto Rico
