Often times I read about a lot of benefits that people from Puerto Rico have. It seems to be looked at as a state in many ways, but in other ways it is not. In actuality it is not of course.|||They demand the same rights as states, yet insist on maintaing their own nationality.|||Puerto Rico was given to the US in 1900 for winning the Spanish American war.
People in Puerto Rico are US citizens but they don't pay federal income tax. The people of Puerto Rico voted in 1967, 1993 and 1998, voting against statehood all three times.
Why don't all other countries do the same thing? The other countries in the region are independent or are members of the British Commonwealth, and they prefer to stay that way.
|||Puerto Rico is not treated like a state, is treated like the colony that is.
